Hi there, Thanks for doing this. I've had some minor issues moving a couple of books across. But only small ones that are easily resolvable. Your csound manual all seems good doesn't it? What now? Well in the short term I suggest re-routing readers from flossmanuals.net to the page here http://floss.booktype.pro/csound/preface/ Is it ok if I set that up on the server? And here's the long story for what now! So the overall challenge of FLOSS Manuals over the last few years has been maintaining a complex technical and organisational structure. When we last met up in Amsterdam we looked at the French FLOSS Manuals group as a good model for the International community. It's more focused and more light-weight. Overall plan looks like this. Legally, disband the FLOSS Manuals Foundation in NL (this is now underway after a board meeting this week), and set up a CiC in the UK for the English language site and community. The idea is to lower administrative costs and time, not have permanent staff and work on a project by project basis. Technically, we need to lower the technical overhead of the project. It's not ideal to have 4 servers doing different things running experimental but outdated code bases. Jo P has been doing a *great* job patching things up but we need to move on. There are 2 main parts of the site. The WRITE section currently at http://booki.flossmanuals.net we'll ask SourceFabric to maintain. This is currently at http://floss.booktype.pro but we'll ask them to host it at http://write.flossmanuals.net. We'll create an archive of the current WRITE site so that manuals can be available if they are needed to be revived. The READ section will stay on a server that Greenhost.nl has kindly offered to sponsor. The php codebase will be replaced with a Django one. We are nearly there with that and starting to work on the html templates. I'm doing this work at the moment as a volunteer and looking to set up some paying projects after the summer when then period of migration is done. In the coming months, they'll be plenty of opportunities for volunteer contributions either small or big to help make this happen. It's always been a good response to call outs for help on this list and that is one of the reasons that I'm so keen to make sure this project keeps going. nice one Mick From helen at creative-catalyst.com Wed Jul 1 14:09:23 2015 From: helen at creative-catalyst.com (helen varley jamieson) Date: Wed, 01 Jul 2015 23:09:23 +0200 Subject: [FM Discuss] Volunteer Manual maintainers wanted to test migration In-Reply-To: <559421FD.5020308@flossmanuals.net> References: <558C1777.80504@flossmanuals.net> <558D1EDE.9060009@phplist.com> <5590FA81.8030001@flossmanuals.net> <5594158F.3030007@joachimheintz.de> <559421FD.5020308@flossmanuals.net> Message-ID: <55945703.8050802@creative-catalyst.com> thanks for this update, mick; i can imagine there has been a lot of discussion & negotiation behind the scenes that has led to working out this new plan, & it sounds all positive & good for a more streamlined way to continue. thanks mick & whoever else has been involved in finding solutions :) h : ) On 1/07/15 7:23 09PM, Mick FM wrote: > > On 01/07/15 17:30, joachim heintz wrote: >> hi mick - >> >> thanks for the excellent description. all worked like a charm, and >> took only some minutes. i checked some chapters, and all looks fine. >> >> what now? > Hi there, > > Thanks for doing this. I'm working my way through the puredata book slowly, because it's a delight to revisit it. I've finished the first 3 sections and I have a few things to report. There's something strange going on in the window title - where did "WhatIsRGP" come from? https://www.anony.ws/image/DyS8 In booktype.pro, when I try to "view draft" I get this error: "I don't know what to do! There is more then one chapter named - "introduction". I am not sure which one to show." I thought perhaps this was because there was a section with the same name as the first chapter, but changing its name made no difference. Therefore the rest of these observations are from edit > view. The changed style of h2 in the css has reduced padding-top from 15px to 0px which makes preceding paragraphs appear too close to the following h2 title, which seems undesirable to me: good: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySm bad: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySw good: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySu bad: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySf
 doesn't wrap

good: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySh
bad: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySR

bad: https://www.anony.ws/image/DySs

That's all so far. Thanks again to all the authors, I'm really enjoying
the book again.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Mark,

yes, you have 3 chapters called "introduction" and this is why it happened.
This should be fixed now. Very creatively they are called: introduction,
introduction1 and introduction2.

The easiest way would be to link to these api calls.

http://objavi.booktype.pro/?book=csound&server=floss.booktype.pro&mode=epub
http://objavi.booktype.pro/?book=csound&server=floss.booktype.pro&mode=openoffice
http://objavi.booktype.pro/?book=csound&server=floss.booktype.pro&mode=web

However as that would put quite a load on the objavi server - that is
not the best thing to do.

There is also a way inside the user interface too.

Are those ready to go? If so I'll download them to the flossmanuals
server so you can link there.

Hi Mark,

Thanks loads for going through this with such detail. I'm glad you are
enjoying the book.
Using the screen shots really works!

Aco beat me to it for the chapter names (thanks Aco). This is something
that can be sorted relatively easily so that's good.

Joachim also noticed that the
 tags weren't code highlighted. So
that is definitely some good feedback.

It looks like it is a good idea to request to SF that we provide a css
file to alter some of these issues and provide a bit of a more FM themed
view to the write area. I'll get back to the list when I find out more
about this.

Thanks again Mark keep us posted if you find anything more.

nice one

Ooof. I've honestly no idea what is happening there. But I found a
workaround.

I've updated the links on the preface page too. So you just need to
check it out.

Congratulations again on a great manual with a lot of great updates!

I've noticed that there's a dead link to a file we should be hosting, at
the bottom of the "Simple Synth" chapter:

http://en.flossmanuals.net/floss/pub/PureData/SimpleSynthesizer/simple_synth.zip

Hopefully someone has a copy of the file somewhere we can link to?

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Derek,

We are migrating content from one server to another at Floss manuals and
noticed a file that has gone missing.

Any chance you can help? Do you have a copy of the zip file mentioned
below at all? If there are other ones to do with that manual that you
have it would be good to get those as well.

Hope you are well.
nice one
Mick

Hi Mark,

Here's the answer about the missing zip file.

Well, it was a ZIP of all the patches in the book. Not trivial to remake.

I think I removed it for several reasons:

1) It is a BOOK after all and I felt that some people involved in the
book sprints were getting lazy by making examples for the ZIP file and
not explaining things in the images and text itself. This goes against
the idea of a book to me, in that it is not self-explanatory.

2) I (or someone else) would have to remake the ZIP file every time a
contributor made new examples. This doesn't lend itself to letting the
"community" edit the book as a whole, since it makes a narrow pinch in
the pipeline for that one ZIP file maintainer.

3) A very early server move/reconfiguration by Adam lost the file, very
soon after the initial project launch. So that would mean going back
quite a few years to look at this stuff all over again.

If someone wanted to help the manual, they would eliminate that link
altogether (I still get asked about it every 6 months or so) and make
sure that the patches in the book itself are complete and well
documented so that a downloadable file is not necessary.

Best!
Derek

Subject: [FM Discuss] Help requested for compiling FM book data for new
	front page
Message-ID: <55A39D4A.2080101@flossmanuals.net>

Hi there,

Regular viewers to this list may remember a document pulling together
manual names, subtitles and keywords for a new front page design.

The next stage is ready for this and it would be great to get some help.
There are a couple of things you could really help with.

First is that I'm migrating the pad to a spreadsheet to make the data
easier to work with, so help doing that would be great.

* Original Pad
https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Q75tIwNwIS
* New Ethercalc sheet
https://ethercalc.org/qnnupgxn6d

The design that Elisa has come up with includes a short description of
the manual.
This is currently missing for most manuals so if you fancy having a go
at editing this it would also be a great step forward.

nice one
Mick

Hi all,

I'm looking for advice about how to proceed with the Real-Time
Communications Quick Start Guide:

  http://rtcquickstart.org

It has been created with Docbook and currently only available through
the web site.

I'm looking at strategies for taking it further, having it translated
and the question of whether or not it should be published in print.

Can anybody comment on any of these things?

Regards,

Daniel
