From mick at flossmanuals.net Sat Feb 4 04:57:50 2017 From: mick at flossmanuals.net (Mick) Date: Sat, 4 Feb 2017 12:57:50 +0000 Subject: [FM Discuss] Form submission from: Get Involved Form In-Reply-To: References: <7f2155af-f2ad-02f6-fbe8-51b12d7ace40@flossmanuals.net> Message-ID: Hello Cathy, I'm ccing the FM discuss list again in case anyone else want to know about the mission of adding the remaining manuals to the new page at http://flossmanuals.net. Here's a summary of the process but feel free to email me with more questions. If you can see a manual in the archive page. http://archive.flossmanuals.net that hasn't made it to the new one at http://flossmanuals.net Check is has been migrated and find out it's new address (many weren't migrated for various reasons - found other homes etc) https://ethercalc.org/k3idd5dtta (substitute http://write.flossmanuals for http://floss.booktype.pro/ ) We need to add the data for the new pages to a file here. https://gitlab.com/mickfuzz/fm_en_splash/blob/master/data/book_details.json You can see the format is as follows |{"title":"How to Bypass Internet Censorship", "category":"Internet", "img_url":"index_fr_files/bypass_600.png", "description":"There is a vast amount of energy, from commercial, non-profit..... ", "read_link":"http://write.flossmanuals.net/bypassing-censorship", "pdf_link":"http://archive.flossmanuals.net/_booki/bypassing-censorship/bypassing-censorship.pdf", "epub_link":"http://archive.flossmanuals.net/_booki/bypassing-censorship/bypassing-censorship.epub", "languages":[ {"name":"English", "link":"http://write.flossmanuals.net/bypassing-censorship"},{"name":"???????", "link":"http://archive.flossmanuals.net/bypassing-censorship-fa/"},{"name":"???????", "link":"http://archive.flossmanuals.net/bypassing-censorship-ar/"}],"keywords":[ {"name":"online-pad"},{"name":"realtime-editing"} ]},| So the process involves the following inputting the manual name and a short description of about 400 characters, a default image of say "index_fr_files/flossman_blue_600.png" and finding links for the online manual and the epubs and pdf files (which are found at the old web page at say |http://archive.flossmanuals.net/bypassing-censorship)| adding any translations that exist choosing keywords, I wouldn't worry about creating images unless you want to (I can send you a template in inkscape if you like) Hope that makes sense. I have been going down the archive page and I think I am up to Linphone, but I know I have missed some too. Do let me know if you have questions and thanks again for helping out. If you know the git system you can do a pull request for the file here with you additions. https://gitlab.com/mickfuzz/fm_en_splash/blob/master/data/book_details.json If not you can just email them too me. Many thanks, Mick On 01/02/17 01:28, Xiong Ying wrote: > > Hi Mick, > > > Thank you very much for your clear and detailed explaination! I > appreciate it very much! Another possibility is updating the web pages at flossmanuals.org I'm thinking the advantage of that, is that an update to those pages needs to happen anyway to reflect the shift from FM away from taking on the writing of commissioned manuals and more to be community focused. I'm imagining Helen that you are thinking of useful information for people that want to volunteer some time to help improve FM. What kind of contents would be useful? However, I just wanted to say that if a self-sufficient freelancer as part of the community did want to get some work by approaching organisations for funding to write specific manuals that is something we definitely support and encourage. If you wanted an endorsement from FLOSS Manuals as part of an application, just get in touch with me and I could get that arranged. At the risk of making this thread a bit confusing. I've taken some time this afternoon to do some work on the above. What I've done is remove content from http://flossmanuals.org to make the site more simple by removing out of date content. There's still probably more to do. If anyone fancies having another go, let me know and I'll get you a log int. It's great you are thinking about writing or editing for our community. You can create an editing account here. http://write.flossmanuals.net/accounts/signin/?redirect=/ Feel free to have a browse of the manuals on the website to get an idea of what is there. Feel free to pick a task either big or small and we can support you to do it. The best way to get help is to join the email list here and send and email here. http://lists.flossmanuals.net/listinfo.cgi/discuss-flossmanuals.net As many of our manuals were created by booksprints or as commissions many of them are quite out of date. So picking one or two and seeing if you can update them is a great mission. Or maybe you know of a new free sofware tool that has come along recently that needs a manual. I'd be interested to know if other people on the email list have suggestions too? I know that ethercalc and libreboard look quite good and we don't have manuals on those yet. We'd be really happy to try to give you credit for your volunteering on our blog. It's not impossible that volunteering with us could help you get other work if you put it on your resume. In anycase you can bask in the kudos! Many thanks Mick
