So I need to press either save or cancel to get the changes through. 
That doesn't seem to help me much if, for example, the page does get 
stuck, or the browser crashes, or I accidentally navigate way from the 
page due to abnormal key bindings ;-)

Well, I believe that it works the way you say. But I don't believe that 
it works the way I'd like it to. It seems that it doesn't upload 
anything to the server, but just holds it somewhere in the browser, 
perhaps, until SAVE or CANCEL is pressed.

But right now, in the manual itself, I don't see any of the changes I 
made today reflected in the online version. I see them in the editor, 
but not here: http://en.flossmanuals.net/PureData/SimpleSynth

New version has lots of text formatting, images and a nasty test phrase 
at the top...

Is that the server cache, or did I skip a step? I've reloaded the page 
about 20 times now as well as cleared my browser cache. A bit frustrating...
