I'm not sure I agree that designers make a living from controlling the
output of their creative output - I think most get paid to make
something and actually in many cases this means the transferal of their
IP to the person or org that is paying them

IP is broken and most broken is copyright. I dont have much respect for
either IP or its subset of copyright except where they preserve freedom
which is seldom the case. The GPL is one case where this freedom is
preserved.
