In looking at the Character Encodings chapter:

Proper typography in any language requires several hundred characters, 
and in a few languages, several thousand.

The alphabet (or syllabary, such as Japanese kana), of course, except 
for Chinese Aa Bb Cc Dd ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ?? ? ? ? ? ?????

is confusing, especially "except for Chinese"
looks like something got dropped/lost
