Git is a _really_ complicated system.  Others have added a nice layer
of porcelain on top of the plumbing.

I have attached a good explanation of the theory behind git-- for
those who are into such stuff.

Hack away for a few days/weeks/month and then when you start asking
yourself what is going on take a look at the  attached pdf.
