Pretty much agree with everything in Ed's mail. I did have one more thing to say about the Command-Line outline.

I wanted it to be more than a high-level breakdown. I put a lot of detail into it for an important reason: I knew that any sections would depend on material from other sections and I wanted each author to feel confident that another section gave some background. For instance, the "for" statement refers to a variable, so the person writing it up has to know whether variables were described earlier or whether he has to take time to describe variables as well as the "for" statement. It turned out that we had some redundancy in the book, but it would have been worse without a detailed outline.
