Hiya,

At http://OpenMute.org we've been working with POD printing since 2005,
and as part of work we're supporters and advocates of FLOSS, back in '05
we toured a bunch of FLOSS artists around the UK in a project called
'UserLand' http://www.metamute.org/node/6949

I'm looking to see if anyone can suggest POD printers in the Bay Area and
New York City area, we are forming a network of POD printers for small
cultural groups to use, we're using this wiki. We prefer to go straight
to the printers rather than systems like Lulu as essentially its half the
price to print and if you can get printers as close as possible to your
outlet or purchaser then you save more on freight.

OpenMute has been working on a variety of POD book Open Source systems
for some time, in a very experimental or speculative components of book
management.

Recently we are interested in the collection of content and secondly the
post production life of a books life. We're tentatively working with
the Open Publishing Lab http://opl.rit.edu/ who've made a web page to POD
system called Page2pub http://opl.rit.edu/project/page2pub

The post production part of a books life involves things like EDI systems
to inject the book into POD printers ordering systems and then ISBN data
into the online distributor systems. When we get some results with these
FLOSS projects we'll report back, at the moment we only really have specs
and design docs, + some experimental failures ;-)

We'll keep FM informed of our FLOSS POD software development to see if
they're of any use.

Ciao

Simon
