[FM Discuss] HTML formatting issue with ReadingandSugar

I'm having an interesting problem writing a chapter about Plain Text
files.  I want to write the following sentence:

"By convention a word is considered to be italicized if it has
asterisks before and after it, like *this*. A word is considered
underlined if it has underline characters before and after, like
_this_."

The HTML is rendered like this:

"By convention a word is considered to be italicized if it has
asterisks before and after it, like <strong>this</strong>.  A
word is considered underlined if it has underline characters before
and after, like <em>this</em>."

If I use the HTML view of the editor I do NOT see the second version.
I see exactly what I wrote in the first version.  So how do I make the
page come out with asterisks and underlines?
