hello,
a brief update on booki and objavi et al.
as i mentioned in an earlier post, booki is coming along great. the
collaborative futures sprint really took booki along way forward since
Aco was in the room building the booki component (there are 3 components
in the booki universe) as writers wrote and facilitators facilitated.
Improvements included:
* fixing issues in server/client messaging
* improving the publishing communication between Booki and Objavi to
include 'advanced' publishing features such as CSS PDF design & support
for custom sizes etc
* adding history functionality (needed for credits and revision
control)
* automated attribution for copyright, attribution and modification
notices
* adding edit notes at save time
* save 'in place' function
* added attribution feature for tracking attributions of material that
is cut-and-pasted into the body of a chapter
* added customisable chapter status tracking feature
Aco is moving on to the user authentication and profiling now, as well
as sorting out the JQuery UI stuff. I have to say I LOVED using booki at
the Collab Futures sprint and just cant wait until we use it for
everything...
Also, Doug is about to tackle some pdf layout (objavi) things (widow and
orphan control) which are in the murky c++ world i believe. He has been
trouble shooting some layout issues with non latin characters. this is
the latest :
http://objavi.flossmanuals.net/books/CircumventionToolsmy-None-2010.02.05-06.46.24.pdf
its book-formatted PDF of the Burmese version of bypassing internet
censorship. Looks very alien...like a book from Futurama...luscious...
also, by the way, the good people at Sesawe have also translated the
same manual into Farsi, Chinese, Arabic and Spanish. we will get them
onto the bookstore as soon as we (they) can.
Doug also hacked some stuff into the TWiki code to stop the spams we
have had recently.
also, Cara is doing great stuff helping me with admin and will be the
point of contact while I am in NZ in the lead up to the code sprint...
The Code Sprint for booki is planned for March 10-15. Doug is handling
all issues for those that wrote to me to say they wanted to attend.
Don't forget Derek Holzer is doing a PureData Book Sprint Tuesday 23 -
Friday 26 February 2010, 17.00-22.00 [GMT +1] in Berlin as well as in
NYC with the ITP/Tisch School of the Arts, New York. If you see Derek
PLEASE buy him a beer (his favourite freedom).
Right now the Etoys people are sprinting their book. There is also a
huge amount of activity going on in the Finnish FM. Big ups to Tomi. I
will also meet with Fi.FMer Minna at transmediale this weekend and
Marcos from Media Lab Prado to discuss a possible collaboration...
Collab Futures is being launched this saturday in Berlin and at Eyebeam
in New York on March 4.
Also, there is a translation sprint in march 2-6 in Madrid to translate
as many manuals as possible into Spanish...hosted by Media lab Prado and
Jennifer Dopazo (who translated Digital Foundations into Spanish) will
come from NYC to be there and I hear Marta Pierano might also attend...
yowsa...and there is other stuff but best left until firmed up :)
