I have been working with Anne to publish the Floss Manuals via Create Space rather than Lulu. They have a template and instructions for creating the spine.
One of the Major advantages of Create Space over Lulu is Create Space is an Amazon owned company and the overall process of feeding the titles to Amazon and getting them promoted on Amazon is much better. The pricing structure and process are much the same for both Lulu and Create Space.
For a recent show in Texas we worked on four titles:
The GNU/Linux Command Line... An Introduction
How to Bypass Internet Censorship
Open Translation Tools
OLPC Laptop Users Guide
The process of submitting a proof, checking the cover, and ordering a proof copy takes some back and forth to get it right just like with Lulu, but the process is similar. Authors may then order copies for themselves just as with Lulu and royalties are paid for Amazon sales. Create Space also has a shopping cart / website where you can create your own site. In my case I am designating any royalties from the sale of these manuals to water purification projects in Haiti, but you are essentially free to do with it as you will, just as with Floss Manuals.
I'm fairly certain that there would be a problem publishing the same title via Create Space by different people. I suggested to Anne in the discussions we had that I would be happy to coordinate things in the process of setting these up and contributors could then order copies via Create Space for drop shipment to them without having to go through the setup process themselves. In the case of Open Translation Tools we set a retail price of $15 and the contributor price is $3.22 each plus shipping.
I am interested in making all of the Floss Manual titles available via this process especially since we have a much cleaner and faster access to Amazon. If you’re interested in pursuing this or have questions, drop me a note.
