[FM Discuss] php challenge...

Adam,

We're pretty swamped right now, but will be glad to look at this in a few
weeks.

BTW, we have a PHP library for WWL so you can embed best effort translation
in your system. For example, you could make all FLOSS Manuals accessible
with draft quality machine translations (with or without user edits). In
addition to community translation, you can also request professional
translation via a mechanical turk style solution by SpeakLike, typically for
5-10 cents/word depending on the language pair. So, for example, if
community translators are not sufficient, you could organize a fundraiser to
commission translations. Most languages are 6-8 cents/word, so the cost to
translate is not overwhelming.

For example, lets say someone wants to make a FLOSS Manual available in
Portuguese, but does not have the people to organize the translation work.
If the book is 10,000 words, it will work out to around $600 to translate,
after which anyone can obtain it. This is easily within reach of non-profit
orgs, schools and groups of interested individuals. All you'd need to do
when rendering a book with pro translation is to include the requester's
SpeakLike credentials in the translation API calls. (It works with other
service bureaus too, but SpeakLike has an especially efficient system in
place at the moment).

The PHP library is at code.google.com/p/worldwidelexicon

Glad to help if you're interested in giving this a try.
