All we need is apparently a tweak to the table cell widths.

An appropriate set of spacing rules for most cases is defined in TeX.
The rest requires that the user of the editor be able to insert
thinspaces, at least. In TeX, a thinspace is one sixth of an em space.

Nope. I am aware that I sometimes give a meretricious impression of
knowing everything, but that turns out not to be the case. ^_^
