I can't remember why, but I'm pretty sure this issue has come up
before, although I also think it was for the same book - so you are
both right, depending on view point or understanding of the phrase
"happened before"

I use Chromium on Ubuntu Maverick.

You can "fix" the bung chars in the TOC (and, incidentally, break the
chars in the body text, grrr) by changing the "encoding" of the page
to Western. In Chromium, this is done via:
Spanner->tools->encoding->Western

To change it back/fix the body text and mangle the TOC, choose Unicode (UTF8).

If you would like to see the same page as an unbroken stream of no
doubt gibberish Chinese/Hindi/etc, you can change the encoding to
Unicode (UTF16-LE). That's more for enjoyment/experimentation and is
definitely off-topic.

Anyway, afaict, this would indicate that there is a problem with the
encoding on the database table/field that holds the TOC data - ie, the
"title" field is probably set to Latin-1(Swedish) and the Body text to
unicode or something similar. It's easy enough to fix at a db level,
although it won't necessarily auto-correct the problem - the titles
may need to be re-entered to see it correctly.

This is my analysis, and it may be incorrect - I don't have access to
the database, but I like Occam, and the evidence points me to this
conclusion.
