thanks for trying it. that error message leaves me wanting though... 

don't know if to suspect memory exhaustion or graphics drivers or what
at this point... ;) 

if anyone cares to try on more macs or can coax a better error
explanation from preview, that would be much obliged!

while we stumble on, hopefully anyone experiencing this issue can use
html versions of the book or install a floss pdf reader, which should
maybe work better probably in this case.
