Hi Elisa,

Thanks for your message. That's a good idea to create a Graphics Floss magazine.
And thanks for your offer to collaborate on this Wall-Paper project.
Will Scribus be okay to create the pages?

Martin

I just arrived from LGM. I have a lot of discussion with some organizator on LGM. One of the idea of LGM is to creat a magazine about Graphics Floss to spread the word. This magazine can be print at house with any print and then every people can help the magazine to be read.
In LGM board have two member of Scribus. They study this possibility and think that a A5 is q good format to have a nice result.

So we can use Scribus (since Inkscape is not multipage, Scribus yes) to creat the PDF. We can collabore in a newspaper with FM and LGM (Create is the name of the support organisation). We can ask tips in creating this home-made-newspaper.

Also i know enought about Scribus and well Gimp & Inkscape etc.

Elisa

2. The original content for this project was to be Digital Foundations, but there's just too much in the entire manual for one newspaper (let alone a WallPaper). I suggest either printing selected chapters from Digital Foundations as successive editions, or print another manual, for example An Open Web.

3. The original engine for generating the newspaper size PDF from the FM content was ObJavi, but after many frustrating attempts I can't get Objavi to style the columns and gutters the way I want. Also Objavi can't cope with 'extra pages' such as a cover page, or a back page with ads. I contacted Douglas for help with Objavi, PDFEdit etc with the promise of funding, but he's pretty busy with other things. So the options available to me are either Inkscape (single page PDF spreads) or a proprietary equivalent. Inkscape would be in keeping with the 'open content, open tools' philosophy of FM and Booki. Possibly, a New Zealand-wide (or further) student (or not) competition to format the first issue of FM WallPaper in Inscape spreads, and these would be four landscape A1 spreads, using two inks and open typefaces, from existing FM (or Booki FM) content.

So any feedback about all this would be great.
I am also trying to get in touch with Open Source Publishing based in Belgium.
Adam -- I have never given up on the newspaper!

hi

I was just reading the blog by long time FMer Martin Kean:
http://martinkean.blogspot.com/2011/05/wall-newspaper.html

It made me think - could we manage a 'WallNews' campaign promoting free
software via FM? I was thinking about a monthly WallNews coming out -
formatted as a US letter/A4 PDF - available as both a one page 'website'
and also as a poster that anyone could print and put on their office
bulletin board or paste to some poster wall somewhere etc...

It would work best if it was well designed and had at least one cool
illustration per issue and was also maybe a bit funny or at least well
written, informative and light hearted. Maybe it could even feature a
cartoon...

then each month the article might be on a free software and referencing
the softwares homesite and the fm docs...

we could also try and get other orgs to push it to their constituency
and see if we can get it to roll...

anyways, just jamming ideas now...it could work pretty well i think as
the action we want people to take is just to print it out and stick it
on a wall somewhere...

whataya rekin? anyone want to take this on? if so i would help push it
hard though the fm newsletter and whatever other channels i can muster...
