I gave them this for their monthly newsletter, distributed to authors.

Google Summer of Code held a unique experiment in documentation
(although hopefully one that will be repeated) from October 17-21.
They brought in FLOSS Manuals, a volunteer organization devoted to
"free manuals for free software," along with four teams of developers
and power users for four free software projects: KDE, OpenMRS,
OpenStreetMap, and Sahana Eden. Four books were written in a three-day
period, and we all learned more about communities and how they can
strengthen their reach through better documentation.
What place does an editor from a traditional publisher have at such a
gathering, and what can a publisher take away from it? That was a
serious matter for debate, and the series Andy Oram wrote for O'Reilly
Radar goes into it in depth.
