Okay doke learning lovers, here's todays update on this...

To take this further I'm working on an Audacity Workbook here;

You can check of the draft or edit it, there.

My idea so far is to have three sections -


   - Basic use
   - Proficient use
   - Advanced use.

It would be great to get feedback on these names - is it too boring?

Each section would include task driven chapters along the lines of,
* This is how you do x
* This is how you do y

Then there is an assessment section - called interesting Basic Use
Assessment -  which contains tasks to review and to test the learners
ability to compete the tasks.

Please have a look at this test assessment section - and do feedback on
just about anything.

What works,  what needs work. How it could be improved visually or
organised better. One thing to add a guess obviously are sample audio files
as Daniel suggested.
I think it could really benefit from some other suggestions.
(It's worth comparing it to the p2p2 way of doing tasks too (see link
further down))

There are some issues that have come up in preparing this work to get it
this far. I'll use the example of Audacity again here, but there will be
parallels to similar software projects.

The first area is - How do we work with the Audacity manual creators at -
http://manual.audacityteam.org/help/manual/

Specifically some of the following questions come up;

* how do we best create this kind of workbook / linear manual without
duplicating effort?
* how can revisions, updates or new chapters created be best fed back to
the Audacity docs community
* how can translations of the workbook best be fed back into the Audacity
doc community

I'm trying to keep notes on things that seem to make things hard work.

My aim was to try to use as much as possible from the Audacity manual at

in the new Audacity workbook and only deviate from that source if really
needed. I struggled to just copy and paste material from the source for a
few things. I thought about why that was.

It comes down to asking what do educators what from docs?  I'm trying to
keep notes and get feedback - here are a few things I thought were good
guidelines. Entry level docs used by educators should be;

   1. a mix of useful background information and task based tutorials
   2. self-contained chapters based on simple tasks that can be copied and
   pasted / remixed (open file - chapter)
   3. chapters containing multiple descriptions of the use of tools that
   are commonly used together to achieve a common task (ie basic editing -
   chapter)
   4. material that is arranged in terms of ability rather than jumping
   from beginner level to advanced tweaking
   5. docs in format that is easy to print out in format and length - you
   can have too may screenshots if you are paying for printing

If anyone is still following this :) - you can see that there is a bit of a
conflict between point 2 and point 3 -

I'm really not sure which approach is best for these workbooks.

   - Very short chapters
   - Longer Chapters which group commonly performed tasks into sections

P2pu how does this best happen?
