I Would use the second method, but have the different tasks build on
each other. For eg. have a chapter on basic editing, that starts with
opening a file, and then moves to the different editing tasks. As these
manuals are written in a workbook style, I would have a specific audio
file that the reader would work on as they follow through the workbook.
So for the trimming example, I would have this file require trimming of
some unwanted sound that comes at the beginning or end of the file, you
have a specific part of the file that you want to cut and move. Another
skill that would be included in this would be the selection of parts of
the audio file that you need to trim. I have found that most people
Learn best when they have a specific example to work through along side
a manual/workbook that is tailored to that example. The hardest part
with this design, is to come up with the example file to work with as
would would need to meet the specific criteria that require all the
actions in the workbook chapter to be carried out on the file.
I would love to help with setting up this pilot, although my experience
with the specified applications has been pretty basic, I have had to
create a number of workbook style manuals on different spreadsheet tools
at work.
You also talked before about what style of workbook would be best. I
think when it comes to learning skills, the style of manual you use is
quite different from that usually found in the documentation section on
most software sites. I have found that that usually just tells you the
technical aspects of how to use a tool. (e.g. you go to this menu,
adjust this option and click OK, etc.). When it comes to manuals that
will be used by trainers/educators in a teaching situation, the manuals
need to go in deeper and show how said tool can be used to create a
desired outcome.
Cheers,
John.
