That's a good idea - the books could be displayed in clusters according
to the group they are part of. Please open a Booktype feature ticket for
that. It may be possible with a template tweak.
Also it should be possible to display featured books at the top of the
homepage, rather than the most active or most recent. The most important
books on the server may not fall into either category. So you might have
a checkbox in the Control Center to feature a particular book.

Currently, that would imply logging in and using the Export tab, I

That works already, just put _full/ on the end of the book URL, e.g:
