We need formal attribution for copyright and licensing purposes (you
can't free-license something if you aren't the recognised copyright holder).

In truth, the work of a 'single author' usually has many contributions -
editors, proof-readers, researchers, layout staff, cover designers,
printers. Perhaps the problem is the cult of the individual genius.

How about: 'We value shared accomplishment over individual glory'? ;-)
