Hi,

I was wondering... If the Finnish StatusNet manual is translated into
English, would somebody from the English side like to reach out to
StatusNet developers to include some more technical content? At least
Tech Tools for Activism has some stuff about StatusNet. I think that
it should be translated into English anyhow, since the Finnish version
would only reach something like 0,003% of the potential audience in
English. The Finnish one will be ready in December and maybe it could
be translated into English around January.

The Finnish version will be just for end-users, unsurprisingly nobody
wanted to go into more technical stuff since we don't have any
StatusNet developers here (please tell me if there are, I haven't seen
any, but I haven't been looking too hard either). It seems like
StatusNet would also need more technical documentation for admins,
which would be easier to do in English.

When I was installing the StatusNet for the manual, I noticed at least
the following things that might need documentation:

- Installation instructions are OK, installation was easy. You could
just copy the current instructions into the manual.

- Some of the plugins have no documentation, which makes it quite hard
to install them. I didn't test all plugins, but at least IRC and XMPP
plugins were not easy to configure. Apparently anti-spam plugins are
totally necessary, there is an invasion of spam bots in the Finnish
site and it started almost immediately after installing it, which
probably means that they are able to find any StatusNet installation
quite fast.

- StatusNet doesn't use templates, you have to do the layout with pure
CSS, which was quite hard, since all other PHP platforms I have been
playing with use some kind of a template.

- Naturally the Finnish localization is incomplete, but fortunately
the Finnish version will include instructions for localizing it in
Translatewiki (which is the way all open source projects should do
localization these days, I don't wanna experience the ritual of trying
to submit a translation file to some code repository ever again).

- StatusNet uses a lot of different semantic markup languages, it
would be interesting to know how you can use them, for an example I
think that the FOAF file has to be manually submitted to some FOAF
directory before it is actually used somewhere? At least Google
doesn't currently read it?

- Some documentation and code examples for using the API. I would be
most interested in participating in this chapter, since it is funny to
curl everything, only with PHP examples though.
