I am not aware of such a function. I thought that the way to add
yourself to a project was to start editing.

This suggests that you give your would-be collaborator an explicit
URL, or that you
1) Unhide the project
2) Have the person join
3) Rehide the project

Groups are not for collaboration on a book. Books do not need to be
attached to groups. Attaching a book to a group does not make the
group collaborators. Collaboration means only editing the same book at
the same time, and having methods of communication, including the live
chat for all active editors.
