[FM Discuss] Mascot for FLOSS Manuals?

I really like this idea of a shared repository. A collection of style sheets would be great to be able to apply a different look to a manual without needing a working knowledge of CSS (I put myself In this category. I can can do the basics but not much more). But it could also be nice to include a bunch of generic images that could be used in various manuals - optional logos included.

I do like Tomy's idea of an orangutan. The colour matches with with FM's scheme and it reminds me of the Librarian from Terry Pratchet's dscworld novels which fits in well with an organisation about manuals. :-).

Cheers,

John

agree with adam - altho i don't think tomi is suggesting it be compulsory or even a standard thing.

if you created such graphics for manuals that you're working on & then offered them for the wider use of the community, i don't see a problem with that. (i've previously suggested that there could be a repository of style sheets for use with manuals, so such graphics could be part of that - a library of CC content available if people want to use it).

h : )

I think each manual is its own community and each decides its own approach. So I'm not in favor of any ideas regarding content that suggests manuals use a set way of doing things.

Thinking about it some more, we could combine the character with the FLOSS Manuals logo, so it would be a Teletubby-like orange being with a monitor embedded in the tummy.

Hi,

I had this idea some time ago, but I cannot remember if I mentioned it on the list.

Can we have a mascot-like cartoon character for FLOSS Manuals? Somebody who would offer all kinds of advice, warnings and notes in the manuals.

Since the next Finnish manual will be partially for schoolchildren, it would be cool if FM had a mascot.

It/she/him would basically be something to replace all kinds of boring warning and note signs. We could have the mascot look really worried when it/she/he is giving a warning and gleefully happy when it/she/he is offering advice.

What do you think? I was planning to use something like this in the Dream School manual anyhow, if it is not useful more generally.

Although I don't know who would create graphics for a character like, with different versions for warnings, notes and advice.

Thinking about it, an Orangutan would have a color scheme that would fit FM orange nicely.

Regards
Tomi
