[FM Discuss] issues with Kdenlive manual images

Mick:

Cool -- I see the button now. No, I really liked the social justice focus in that Kden manual, and I liked all the general, tool-agnostic stuff about video editing. I just probably need to write out of my own experience, which has mostly been an intensive use of ShutCut for editing a particular video tutorial series that's now on youtube. In one sense, even doing a text-and-screenshot FM type how-to for ShotCut sort of goes against my better judgment. OTOH, there is sooo little extant ShotCut documention of any kind out there, so an FM manual could actually find some real use. Now I just have to find the time...

Meanwhile, really a great experience working with the group on Audacity. It's a great group and a great platform.

best,

Matt

Hi there Matt,

We were hit by spam a while back so I locked down that permission.

I’ve opened it up now but we should keep an eye on new books here - http://write.flossmanuals.net/list-books/

Sounds good about the focus shift. We were commissioned by v4c.org to do that book on Kdenlive hence the social justice focus.

It was me and Anna Morris that wrote the book so feel free to ask us questions about the process.

Thanks

Mick

Mick:

Hey, let's suppose I was interested in launching a new manual for ShotCut, modeled to some extent on the Kdenlive, although probably from a somewhat different use-case angle than social activism just bc I haven't done a lot of activist video work. I actually researched and evaluated a number of open-source video editors, including Kdenlive, as well as numerous 'free' versions of non-free industrial software, and I decided personally that ShotCut was the way to go.

The thing is, I don't seem to have the "Create New Book" button in my dashboard, where the Booktype manual suggests it should be (or anywhere else I can locate). Is this a role/permissions issue? I can create a new Group, and I can Import a book, but I don't find the Create New Book button in either the main dashboard tab or the My Books tab. What say you? Do you need to create the book for me, or give me additional permissions?

thanks,

Matt

Good spot there Matt,

I was going to suggest Kdenlive manual perhaps as a model for an open shot manual.

The images *are* missing in that manual.

I guess they need to be uploaded from here. Which is good to know as a way of rescuing manuals that were incompletely imported in to the new system.

http://archive.flossmanuals.net/_booki/how-to-use-video-editing-software/how-to-use-video-editing-software.epub

I’ve tested this and if it’s done from the images and files section it is doable.

I’ve done 10 or so but there are a lot so if anyone wants to chip in just go for it and post back you progress here.

The process would be

• Grab epub from above,

• rename .zip, unzip it

• go to http://write.flossmanuals.net/kdenlive/_edit/

Booktype Sign In<http://write.flossmanuals.net/kdenlive/_edit/>

write.flossmanuals.net

Free Manuals for Freedom

• go to images and files tab

• upload image from the static directory (one by one!) to this book

• F5 – refresh to see the images appear.

Thanks all!

Mick

thanks Mick. I can now see the published 2.x version at flossmanuals.net.

Perfectionist that I am, I did go in and make a few more wording changes to the Edit chapter (where it was entirely my own prose). I have not re-published; I figure I'd let others tinker with their own contributed areas for a while longer and we can re-publish wherever.

Btw, I had been considering knocking out a new manual on ShutCut, an open-source video editor I've been using recently. So I was exploring existing Floss books on video editing to determine if there was a real need. The one manual I found that really focuses on a single video-editing tool uses Kdenlive, which is certainly a viable open-source alternative to ShotCut. However, in looking thu the published Kdenlive manual, I notice that every image link seems to be broken! Seriously, every single screenshot or other image. When you go into edit mode, the images don't appear at all; but in published mode they display as missing images. What might have caused this? Did some process nuke or move the entire image library? (it appears to be totally empty). I haven't found this issue with any other manuals I've reviewed yet, but I certainly haven't reviewed them all and am not really undertaking to at the moment. Nor do I really have time to spin up on Kdenlive such that I could replace all the missing images (even assuming I could figure out how to well enough from context). If I was going to put that kind of effort in, I'd do it with Shotcut.

But I thought maybe you'd be aware of some simple behind-the-scenes operation that would restore all of the Kdenlive image files to their correct location.

Matt

I have done a custom pdf generation using the default settings on the server.
I'm pretty sure this can look a lot better but I don't have capacity to work on this so hoping that others in the community can work together on this one.

Thanks

thanks a lot, Rosalind -- I suspected that was the case.

So Mick, I think we might be clear to publish now, whenever you want to pull the trigger.

best,
