Adam,

We're pretty swamped right now, but will be glad to look at this in a few weeks.

BTW, we have a PHP library for WWL so you can embed best effort translation in your system. For example, you could make all FLOSS Manuals accessible with draft quality machine translations (with or without user edits). In addition to community translation, you can also request professional translation via a mechanical turk style solution by SpeakLike, typically for 5-10 cents/word depending on the language pair. So, for example, if community translators are not sufficient, you could organize a fundraiser to commission translations. Most languages are 6-8 cents/word, so the cost to translate is not overwhelming.

For example, lets say someone wants to make a FLOSS Manual available in Portuguese, but does not have the people to organize the translation work. If the book is 10,000 words, it will work out to around $600 to translate, after which anyone can obtain it. This is easily within reach of non-profit orgs, schools and groups of interested individuals. All you'd need to do when rendering a book with pro translation is to include the requester's SpeakLike credentials in the translation API calls. (It works with other service bureaus too, but SpeakLike has an especially efficient system in place at the moment).

The PHP library is at code.google.com/p/worldwidelexicon

Glad to help if you're interested in giving this a try.

On Fri, May 28, 2010 at 4:30 AM, adam hyde <adam@flossmanuals.net> wrote:

So I have been working on a script ("booki publisher") to replace the
front end of FM.

So far its in php and runs very nicely. All flat file, a basic
templating system, no extra libs. Aco designed a plugin structure and
jan gerber made a widget structure. there are several plugins already
and one widget (comment widget).

the widget structure is nice and i think this is something that we can
really use to extend the current fm manuals...andy had been talking for
a long time about having quiźzes in manuals for example...this would be
simple now to make in php using the widget structure

I can currently use the scripts to get manuals from booki, store them
locally, and display in the right template. The script also displays the
front page of fm and shows the caegorised lists of manuals that are
stored locally.

thats most of the work done...now......i need some help again...there
are two things i would like to make before the script can replace twiki
and hence they are blockers for our move to booki...

1. the remix plugin needs to be made (mirroring the current fm remix
functions but maybe using jquery insead of mochikit)
2. a blog plugin needs to be made...(simple blog plugin)

any php gurus out there willing to bite either of these off?
