the mentoring issue is an interesting one. Ubuntu Docs have a mentoring
program. I don't know how if it works well, but they have a lot of
people writing to their list asking to be part of it.
I think if we did such a thing we should be very careful to offer it on
a casual basis - an opt-in for anyone that wants it. It might even be
something that we encourage via the list only. We have 200+ subscribers
now, and its conceivable that some on the list would welcome a volunteer
mentor or some feedback...it would be interesting, for example, to see
what would happen if someone (for example, an experienced editor from a
known publisher) was to make an offer to mentor to the list...anyone fit
that profile? ;)
