 Here's my suggested TOC for this. I agree we could do this as an
online grassroots thing but would be good to get a partner org with
minimal funding to actually time manage & publish it - otherwise it
may flounder as a 'good idea' that never actually happens.

>> Concepts:

Introduction - what this manual covers

What is social media - 'social media' term is a bit bullshit as email
+ html is social media, everything is social media so what are we
really talking about; ease of publishing, social filtering of info,
building useful online communities. Some great already on this in
Anne's book

Why avoid Corporate Social Media tools; promote open web + privacy -
lots of stuff on this in 'An Open Web', and some in Tech tools for
Activism.

>> Examples: Some real life examples of groups & projects doing some good stuff in this area.

>> Tools: from old school to new school (as a suggestion) - a lot of these are in Basic Internet Security & Tech Tools and different chapters like

* Email
* Email lists
* Irc
* Wikis & Bookis
* Blogs / Websites
* BuddyPress & Wordpress networks
* Crabgrass
* Microblogging - statusnet and beyond
* Diaspora / Friendica
* Android Apps - secure text & etc
* Other News tools

>> Strategy: some ideas / plans

* Militant: Forming a totally alternative social networking / media strategy

* Pragmatic: Using all tools available to you but plugging them
together to do automated crossposting - and filtering for you so you
get the best of both worlds.

* Fuckit: just give up and give in to privacy policies like Google,
Face book and Skipity http://www.skipity.com/privacy.htm
