Open Translation Event
Aspiration Tech (http://aspirationtech.org/) are a ANGO based in San
Francisco with the aim to 'connect non-profit and civil society
organisations'.

Their work is mainly in the area of free software and they are the
organisers (along with Mi2 - http://ww.mi2.hr) of the Open Translation
Tools (http://opentranslation.aspirationtech.org/index.php/Main_Page )
event in Zagreb, Croatia.

The event gathers together about 40 people from around the world. I
represented FLOSS Manuals and ,join a very interesting selection of
volunteers and professionals from around the world that are interested
in the methods and toolsets of open translation. In this context 'open
translation' refers to the practice of translating open content and
using, where possible, free and open source tools to do so.

The timing could not be better for us as we are currently developing a
suite of tools to assist the translation of the site into new languages
and to assist the management of translating manuals. Both these tools
will be finished within 2 weeks, however the event is just in time to
assist Aleksandar Erkalovic and myself with the final design and
development of the translation workflow management plugins.

The Open Tools Translation event is into its second day, the first day
was a preliminary 'mapping' day, with groups forming to describe the
landscape of available tools
(http://opentranslation.aspirationtech.org/index.php/Open_Source_Translation_Tools) and the different 'use scenarios' (http://opentranslation.aspirationtech.org/index.php/Open_Content_Translation_Use_Cases) for these tools. Additionally there was a great 'translation 101' session describing the basic principles of translation tools, methodology and jargon.
