One more suggestion:
Use the second person instead of the third person. That is, say "you"
instead of "the user" or "the reader". It's more personal and
engaging. And it's perfectly OK in technical writing, in spite of
anything your high school English teacher might have said. :-) It's
also helpful in avoiding many uses of passive voice.
